Driving with Diabetes: Importance of regular medical assessments for commercial drivers

Updated: Oct 18

Commercial driving delivery

A commercial driving medical assessment evaluates a driver’s health to ensure fitness to drive commercial vehicles, such as Uber and taxis, prioritizing both the driver's safety and that of others on the road.

Conditions like diabetes, if inadequately managed, can significantly impair focus and driving capacity.

Your Juno Endocrinologist will conduct a thorough review of your medical history, perform a physical examination, and carry out blood tests to assess your glucose control. Depending on your diabetes management, they may recommend monitoring your blood sugar with finger-prick tests or the use of a continuous glucose monitor. An eye check with your optometrist is also necessary to ensure your vision is adequate for driving. We will assess your hypoglycemic awareness and confirm that you are taking necessary precautions to prevent low blood sugar events while driving. This process may require one or two visits, depending on our findings.

This comprehensive evaluation ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and enhances safety on the road. Depending on your license type and medications, this review may need to be repeated with an Endocrinologist every 1-2 years.
